DANVILLE -- Posted on the fence encompassing the tennis courts at Monte Vista High School is a sign of written rules. No. 1 reads: "Play is limited to one hour when others are waiting."

Yeah, right.

Megan Guidrey beat Megan Martens 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles in a match that took 2 1/2 hours to complete. As a result, Monte Vista remained unbeaten with a surprisingly easy 8-1 decision over California on Tuesday in an East Bay Athletic League showdown.

The Mustangs (6-0) increased their lead over the second-place Grizzlies (4-2) by two games and clearly established themselves as league favorites.

When Martens' return floated long, Guidrey watched closely as the ball missed the baseline, ensuring the Mustangs' victory.

"I always play three sets, so I was kind of expecting something like this would happen," Guidrey said.

What wasn't expected, however, was how convincingly the Mustangs handled the defending EBAL champs. Sam Cannon posted the Grizzlies' lone win at No. 5 singles, but Cal won just two sets the remaining eight matches.

"We were psyched for this," Monte Vista coach Patty Gross. "Since we (won) last time, I was nervous this time. But everyone came through."

The Mustangs set the pace in the singles matches, where Jen Mitchell and Courtney Nagle posted big wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Mitchell, a sophomore, beat freshman Kristen Reed for the second time, 6-3, 6-1 in a match that lasted 1 1/2 hours. "I was kind of overpowering her this time. Last time we played, I was playing her game," Mitchell said.

Nagle, a freshman, earned a surprising 6-1, 6-1 victory over junior Erika Jensen, the defending EBAL singles champion.

Noemi Hites and Lucy Liao also posted singles wins for the Mustangs, who swept all three doubles matches without dropping a set.
